After a brief break due to a run slump, Virat Kohli is ready to return to play for the Indian team in the Asia Cup 2022. The star batter has been struggling to get going and has seen a long spell of dry runs in his career. Virat has not scored a century since November 2019 and would be looking to get some runs under his belt.
Kohli scored 11 and 20 in the rescheduled Edgbaston Test during the recent England tour. He subsequently scored 12 runs in two T20Is before scoring 33 runs in the three-match ODI series. Meanwhile, former India player Sanjay Manjrekar praised his approach with the bat, which demonstrates the team's aggressive mindset in the 20-over format.
"They should celebrate because the class is back. Virat Kohli has had some first-hand experience of this new approach of India in T20 cricket in England. So he has embraced that, not with great success, but he has embraced that. You have got to give credit to Virat Kohli," Manjrekar told 'Sports Over the Top', a Sports18 show.
"He didn't care about whether he was getting runs or whether he was getting out because he desperately needed runs in England and he is looking for international runs but he still sort of backed up the Indian team's new philosophy. He was trying to hit boundaries from ball number one," he added.
Asia Cup 2022
On August 28, reigning champions India will face Pakistan in a high-octane contest in the Asia Cup 2022. The attention will be on Kohli, who has only played four T20Is this year, scoring 81 runs at an average of 20.25.
In the six-team event in the UAE, the former Indian skipper aims to rediscover his lost form. Group A consists of India, Pakistan, and a qualifying team, while Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. The top two teams from each group go to the Super 4 round, while the top two teams from Super 4 advance to the final.
