India's young batting sensation Shubman Gill was honoured with two prestigious awards at the CEAT Cricket Awards ceremony on Monday, August 21. The 23-year-old has excelled in all forms of the game since the onset of 2023, which has earned him the ‘ODI Batter of the Year’ as well as ‘International Cricketer of the Year’ awards. Gill, who received the award from Rohit Sharma, thanked Indian captain and head coach Rahul Dravid for believing in him at the top of the order.

The Punjab-born cricketer smashed centuries in all three formats in the first three months of 2023, including a double century in ODIs. He scored 750 runs in 12 matches this year and 638 runs in 12 innings in 2022. Furthermore, the right-hander bagged the Orange Cap for the highest run-scorer in IPL 2023 by plundering 890 runs from 17 innings at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80.

Meanwhile, during the award ceremony, Gill said that legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar inspired him when he started playing cricket. “Sachin Tendulkar was my inspiration when I started playing cricket," the 2018 U19 World Cup winner said. When asked which superhero would suit former Indian captain, Virat Kohli, Gill replied, “Hulk, he’s that Hulk energy.”

I was always a fan of Virat bhai: Gill

During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, the Gujarat Titans opener said that Sachin Tendulkar was his inspiration while growing up. However, he went on to say that he became a fan of Kohli after the batting maestro's retirement. “(Greatest inspiration) While growing up, it was Sachin sir. Once he retired and once I started to understand the game a bit more, I was always a fan of Virat bhai,” he revealed while speaking to host broadcaster Star Sports last year.

Shubman Gill had a poor outing in the recently concluded West Indies tour, which consisted of two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. His next assignment is the 2023 Asia Cup, co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, starting on August 30. He is also expected to play a key role in the ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by India from October 5.
