According to the former Indian Cricket Board President and former India captain Sourav Ganguly, the organisation was not prepared for Virat Kohli to resign as Test captain of India, which was a choice made on a personal level. Ganguly's most recent comments follow calls from supporters for Virat Kohli to be made India's Test captain again after the Rohit Sharma-led team lost to Australia by a score of 209 runs during the World Test Championship final.

In an effort to support Kohli's reinstatement as the team's captain, fans have started citing specifics from his record as captain on social media. Notably, Kohli concluded his term as the Indian skipper with 40 triumphs and 11 draws across 68 games, ranking him as the fourth-most accomplished skipper in Test history.

“Selectors had to appoint an India captain” : Sourav Ganguly

In an exclusive one to one interview with Aaj Tak, Sourav Ganguly spoke about the ugly circumstances related to the Test captaincy after the South Africa tour. He said,

"BCCI were not prepared for Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. It was unexpected for us also after the South Africa tour. Only Virat Kohli can reveal why he left the captaincy. There is no point talking about this now because Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy. Selectors had to appoint an India captain. And Rohit was the best option at that time."

Virat Kohli stated his intention to stay in the role while retiring from the T20I leadership earlier in 2021, but the Indian Cricket Board chose to replace him in ODIs nevertheless, leading to a flurry of rumours regarding his association with the organisation and Ganguly. Prior to the T20 World Cup in October, Kohli gave up his position as T20I captain. In December, he lost his ODI captaincy before the South Africa tour. Conflicting accounts of the T20 decision and how Kohli was notified of his ouster as ODI captain in a routine conversation with the selectors led to an open dispute between Kohli as well as Indian Cricket Board President (at that time) Sourav Ganguly as a result of these events.
