Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal

Indian team management's request to Indian selectors for sending openers Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal has been declined. The management had requested the Indian selection committee to send the opening batters to England as a replacement for Shubman Gill. Gill sustained an injury following the completion of the World Test Championship (WTC) against New Zealand in Southampton. The Indian selectors have suggested the team management draft Abhimanyu Easwaran. He is already with the Indian cricket team as a reserve opener in the squad.

Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul, who have opened the innings in the purest format, are also part of the squad. Mayank Agarwal hasn't played international cricket since the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. On the other hand, KL Rahul's previous Test appearance came back in the year 2019.

India-England Test series set to commence from August 4

Both Shaw and Padikkal are currently a part of India's limited-overs squad in Sri Lanka. Prithvi Shaw was dropped from the playing XI after his failure in the pink-ball Test against Australia in Adelaide. He bounced back into the national team on the basis of his excellent form in Vijay Hazare Trophy and Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Prithvi Shaw has so far played 3 ODIs. He is likely to be preferred over Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad for the opening job in ODI and T20I series.

Talking about Devdutt Padikkal, he has just received his maiden India call-up for the Sri Lanka series. The youngster came up with a solid performance in the 50-over tournament and IPL to earn his maiden India call-up. The India-Sri Lanka series is going to conclude on July 25. Thus, Shaw and Padikkal can be available from the 2nd Test match, but that is unlikely to happen. The three ODIs of the series are going to be played on July 13, 16, and 18. Following the ODI series, India and Sri Lanka will lock horns in three T20Is on July 21, 23, and 25. On the contrary, the India-England Test series will commence on August 4.
