Legendary Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi appreciated the Indian team on winning the Border Gavaskar series against Australia. Shahid Afridi stated that everyone would remember the series for a long time. India defeated Australia in their fortress, The Gabba, and finally breached the record. It took 32 years for any team to win against Australia at Brisbane.
The inexperienced Indian cricket team defeated Australia in their home ground by three wickets against all odds to clinch the series 2-1. The last time a visiting team won a series in Brisbane was back in November 1988. It was the West Indies side that thrashed the hosts by nine wickets.
In the first Test against Australia, the visitors were bowled out for 36. There were several cricket experts who underestimated India after their embarrassing defeat in the first encounter. India registered their lowest-ever Test total in Adelaide. After the first Test's conclusion, India was without Virat Kohli and fast bowler Mohammad Shami. Kohli had to head back home to attend the birth of his first child. On the other hand, Shami sustained an injury and had to go to the National Cricket Academy.
India claims top spot in World Test Championship
The injury list, however, increased each Test match. With so many injuries, India still managed to win the Melbourne Test by eight wickets. The visitors also recorded a draw at Sydney. India lost wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul and pacer Umesh Yadav due to injuries in the third match.
It was a challenge for team India when they had three main players injured before the final game. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Hanuma Vihari were ruled out of the fourth and final Test. However, Ajinkya Rahane proved everyone wrong and registered a famous victory at Brisbane. India handed debuts to five players across the four-match Test series. Despite so many inexperienced players, the men in blue still finished on the winning side.
With the win, India is now leading the World Test Championship table with 430 points. Team India has played 13 matches in five series. They have won nine and lost three Tests. The Indian team has also got 71.1% of the total possible points. England and South Africa are currently placed on fourth and fifth spots in the WTC standings.
