All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan makes a grand return to the international circuit as Bangladesh defeated West Indies by six wickets. The first One Day International match between the two teams was held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. ICC banned Hasan in October 2019 for two years.
Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal won the toss and elected to field first. Pace bowler Hasan Mahmud made his debut. The visitors handed an ODI first cap to Joshua Da Silva, Andre McCarthy, Nkrumah Bonner, Kyle Mayers, Jahmar Hamilton and Chemar Holder.
Shakib devastated the West Indies’ middle-order
Bangladesh had an easy target of 123 runs to chase. The hosts wrapped up the innings by a six-wicket victory and 97 balls to spare. As Bangladesh opted to bowl first, Shakib recorded figures of 4-8. With this brilliant bowling efforts, the hosts bowled out Windies for 122 within 33 overs. Shakib has now registered the best One Day bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler against West Indies.
Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal scored 44 to help the hosts knock off the paltry target in the 34th over. West Indies off-spinner Akeal Hosein made things difficult for Bangladesh with 3-26 on his international debut.
At one point of time, the Bangladesh team found themselves in trouble as the Windies managed to dismiss Najmul and Tamim. With their dismissal, the hosts were 83/3 in the 23rd over. Shakib went on to play a crucial knock of 19 runs. However, with only 18 runs remaining to win the first match, the all-rounder ended up losing his wicket.
On the other end, team West Indies could not stay at the crease for a long time. It was only Kyle Mayers and Rovman Powell with scores of 40 and 28 who helped the team recording a respectable target. Both the teams will now face each other for the second ODI match on Friday.
