The Border-Gavaskar trophy is just around the corner, with the 1st Test Match to start on 17th December. Australia now has an issue to resolve regarding a possible opening option against the Men in Blue. Shaun Marsh could be an answer to this conundrum. Marsh last played a Test Match for Australia back in January 2019. Since then, he has not been called up for national duty.

David Warner, who should have opened for Australia, is sidelined with a groin injury. David Warner incurred a groin issue while fielding in the 2nd ODI against India. Warner has not returned to action and hence did not play against India in the T20I series as well. Pucovski, who also served as an option, got a concussion in the 1st practice game.

With 2 opening options out, Justin Langer believes Shaun Marsh is likely to open for Australia in the Border-Gavaskar trophy. The Australian cricketer was on fire in the Sheffield Shield this season. With 3 hundred in his last 4 matches, Marsh seems to justify his candidacy for the opening spot.

Coach Justin Langer also feels that Marsh has done more than enough to book a spot in the side. Langer reckons that Marsh put up some solid performances with the bat in the Sheffield Shield this season. Not only this season, but Marsh also put some decent performances in the Sheffield Shield last year as well. Moreover, Marsh is also a very popular cricketer among fans. Hence, Langer feels that Marsh is the favorite candidate to open for Australia as of now.

I know how important an opening partnership is for a successful team: Langer

It felt that Australia solved the opening conundrum with Warner and Joe Burns as openers for the team. However, Warner is out injured and Joe Burns has not been in his best form for some time. With Marsh and Marcus Harris available, Langer would want to utilize the remaining opening options effectively.

Langer stated that he is working on finding the ideal batting combination. With the openers set to face bowlers such as Bumrah and Shami, it will be a challenging task for Langer. The first Test Match will take place at the Adelaide Oval.

With only a week left to decide, Langer would want to analyze the current situation properly. Langer will want to work on his batting options and devise an ideal batting line-up before the 1st Test Match.
