Shikhar Dhawan will be eager to make his case for the T20 World Cup: VVS Laxman

Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman claims that Shikhar Dhawan will be eager to make his case for the forthcoming T20 World Cup. In a recent discussion, VVS Laxman explained why the Sri Lanka series would be necessary for Shikhar Dhawan to nail down his position for the T20 World Cup at the top of the order. Shikhar Dhawan was quite impressive in the IPL. He had scored 618 runs for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020. The opening batsman is also IPL 2021’s top-scorer with 380 runs at an average of 54.28 and a strike rate of 134.27. 

If Shikhar Dhawan manages to perform well in the 3-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, then he might fix his place in the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup.

Before 2020, Shikhar Dhawan had cemented his place in the Indian cricket team duo his consistency in the limited-overs format. The opening batsman scored 1673 runs in 63 innings at an average of 27.88 in T20Is. However, the emergence of KL Rahul has put him in a spot of bother. Since January 2020, KL Rahul has amassed 961 runs in 29 matches at an average of 33.13. Only Rohit Sharma has a better average playing a lesser number of games. Thus, India’s tour of Sri Lanka is going to be very important for Shikhar Dhawan. Former India batsman VVS Laxman has clearly stated that the captain for the Lankan tour will have to score runs to be considered for the T20 World Cup.

The Sri Lanka series is going to start with the ODIs from July 13, followed by T20s from July 21. The Indian cricket board has selected 20 players in the team and five net bowlers. Team India will also play a couple of intra-squad matches after landing in the Island nation. All six games are going to be played at R Premadasa stadium in Colombo.
