Shimron Hetmyer can take West Indies cricket forward: Kieron Pollard

West Indies captain Kieron Pollard stated that star batsman Shimron Hetmyer could dominate all game formats. However, Pollard opines that the southpaw has to work harder to gain the confidence of the selection committee. Hetmyer has not been a regular face of the WI squad in the last few years due to injury concerns. The left-handed batsman was ruled out of the Bangladesh tour earlier this year. Since making his international debut in 2017, the 24-year-old has only represented the country in 16 Tests, 45 ODIs, and 27 T20Is. During an interview on the Line & Length TV Show on Sportsmax, Kieron Pollard reckoned that Shimron Hetmyer is the player who will take West Indies cricket forward.

During an interview on the Line & Length TV Show on Sportsmax, Kieron Pollard reckoned that Shimron Hetmyer is the player who will take West Indies cricket forward.

Over the last year, the 24-year-old has scored only 100 runs from five T20Is and 14 runs in two ODIs. The West Indies team will play against South Africa in a five-match T20I series starting June 26. Pollard warned that the Caribbean team would have to be at their best to defeat a talented side like SA.

Kieron Pollard named as skipper for the upcoming T20I series

WI has recently announced an 18-man provisional squad for three consecutive five-match T20I series against Australia, South Africa and Pakistan. That equals 15 T20Is; the Men in Maroon will have a hectic schedule ahead of them. However, most of the cricketers who played in a 2-1 series win over Sri Lanka have managed to retain their spot in the squad.

The selection committee has also roped in 41-year-old legendary batsman Chris Gayle into the side. Thus, this is a clear indication that the Jamaican will be a part of the T20I World Cup squad too. Mumbai Indians all-rounder Kieron Pollard has been named the captain, whereas wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran will be his deputy. West Indies are one of the top contenders of ICC WT20 to be held later this year in October-November in India. The provisional WI team will train at St Lucia before the first T20 match against South Africa. The subsequent team is going to be different for the games, which will be picked from the provisional squad.

West Indies provisional squad

Kieron Pollard (C), Nicholas Pooran (VC), Fabian Allen, Dwayne Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell, Fidel Edwards, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Evin Lewis, Obed McCoy, Andre Russell, Lendl Simmons, Kevin Sinclair, Oshane Thomas, Hayden Walsh Jr.
