The Indian cricket team traveling to Sri Lanka might have to miss the services of their middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer. It was anticipated that Iyer who picked up a shoulder injury during the England series would be fit in time. In the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the Mumbaikar was being looked at as a captain contender. But, unfortunately, Shreyas Iyer would be unavailable for selection as he will not recover by then. His absence from the squad would be a significant setback for the team, considering they will also miss its big stars who would be in England then.
Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer had injured his shoulder in the ODI series against England. The batsman hurt his left shoulder badly while fielding in the first ODI against England in Pune when he dived to stop a shot from Jonny Bairstow. The 26-year-old had missed the last two ODI games and has also been ruled out of IPL 2021. According to the report, Shreyas Iyer is likely to be out of action for the next four months. The youngster had also signed with English county Lancashire. But in the wake of the injury, he might not play for them. However, Shreyas Iyer was impressive in the T20I games against England. He scored 67 runs in the first T20I and a quickfire 37 in the fourth match.
Who will lead team India during the Sri Lanka tour?
The medical staff of the Board of Control of Cricket of India would look to get the batsman in top condition ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup. The competition is scheduled to take place in October-November. Meanwhile, there is going to be a toss-up between opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the captaincy role during the Sri Lanka tour. According to reports, former India cricketer Rahul Dravid would be coaching the side. Dravid will also be assisted by his team from the National Cricket Academy.
Team India will tour Sri Lanka in July, and both teams will face each other in 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has proposed a schedule to the BCCI. The plan includes both teams locking horns in three ODIs first, and the T20I matches then follow it. The three One Day Internationals will be played on July 13, 16, 19, and then the T20I series running from July 22-27.
