Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer will undergo surgery on April 8. The batsman hurt his left shoulder badly while fielding in the first ODI against England in Pune when he dived to stop a shot from Jonny Bairstow. The 26-year-old had missed the last two ODI games and has also been ruled out of IPL 2021.
According to the report, Shreyas Iyer is likely to be out of action for the next four months. The youngster had signed with English county Lancashire, but in the wake of the injury, he might not play for them. Shreyas Iyer was impressive in the T20I games against England. He scored 67 runs in the first T20I and a quickfire 37 in the fourth match.
Rishabh Pant to captain Delhi Capitals in the absence of Shreyas Iyer
With Shreyas Iyer unavailable for the upcoming season, Delhi Capitals have appointed young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant as the captain for IPL 2021. The 23-year-old will be the youngest skipper in the forthcoming season and will also lead an IPL team for the first time in his career.
Rishabh Pant has been in great form this year. The left-handed batsman had a poor 2020 where he lost his spot in the Indian team across all the formats and also had a poor IPL. However, the youngster proved his worth and impressed against England at home in all the formats. The 23-year old, who joined the Delhi Capitals in 2016, stated that it's an absolute honour to lead the team. Pant also thanked the franchise owners for choosing him for performing the role and hopes that with the help of the accomplished senior players and coaching staff, he would be able to give his best.
Pant would now be hoping that his fine form with the bat continues in his maiden IPL season as captain. Delhi Capitals, who are targeting their first-ever IPL title this year, would be hoping that Rishabh Pant turns out to be the lucky charm for them. The Delhi-based franchise made it to the final in the last edition and is one of the favourites in the 14th edition of the league. Delhi Capitals will commence their IPL 2021 campaign against MS Dhoni's team on April 10 in Mumbai.
