Shreyas Iyer

Retired Indian batsman Aakash Chopra believes Shreyas Iyer will resume his captaincy duties once the season restarts. Chopra's remarks came when a fan asked if Shreyas Iyer will lead DC mid-season. Notably, Rishabh Pant guided the side in their first eight league games as regular captain Shreyas Iyer was ruled out due to a shoulder injury. The batsman underwent surgery in early April and is anticipated to stay out of action for 3 to 4 months.

The batsman hurt his left shoulder badly while fielding in the first ODI against England in Pune when he dived to stop a shot from Jonny Bairstow. The 26-year-old had missed the last two ODI games and has also been ruled out of IPL 2021. Iyer had also signed with English county Lancashire, but he might not play for them in the wake of the injury. Nevertheless, Shreyas Iyer was impressive in the T20I games against England. He scored 67 runs in the first T20I and a quickfire 37 in the fourth match.

Shreyas Iyer to miss the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka

With Shreyas Iyer unavailable for the 14th IPL season, Delhi Capitals have appointed young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant as the captain for IPL 2021. The 23-year-old was the youngest skipper in the season and led an IPL team for the first time in his career. Shreyas Iyer had become the captain of Delhi Capitals in 2018 after Gautam Gambhir had stepped down from the role. Since then, the youngster has led the franchise brilliantly. In the 2019 season, he guided the Capitals to the playoffs, but the team was defeated by three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings. In 2019, Iyer was the skipper of the Delhi franchise that went all the way to the final of the competition. However, the side was defeated by Mumbai Indians. In the 14th IPL season, DC remains one of the favorites to lift the title.

Shreyas Iyer is also likely to miss the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka. It was anticipated that Iyer, who picked up a shoulder injury during the England series, would be fit in time. In the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the Mumbaikar was being looked at as a captain contender. But, unfortunately, Shreyas Iyer would be unavailable for selection as he will not recover by then.
