Only 15 days have passed since Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli ended their dispute by shaking hands and putting the "no handshake" controversy behind them. However, by criticising a tweet written by the former BCCI president, supporters appear to have uncovered a third chapter in their feud. Ganguly posted a tweet praising the "standard" of the IPL on the same day when three centuries were made in the last double-header in IPL 2023 by Cameron Green, Kohli, and Shubman Gill.
The former Indian team skipper Sourav Ganguly tweeted that, "
What talent this country produces... Shubman Gill… Wow…two stunning knocks in two halves. IPL… what standards in the tournament."
Since Green as well as Gill's twin centuries represented the future and the "talent" he was referring to, Ganguly's tweet was specifically addressed to them. Fans, however, saw a flaw in the tweet and thought Kohli, who made a record seventh IPL century and beat Universe Boss Chris Gayle for the benchmark, should have been included.
How did the Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli matter begin?
From the start, Kohli and Ganguly had a fantastic rapport, but the whole captaincy scandal soured things for them. According to reports, Kohli wants to continue leading India in either of the two formats after giving up the T20I leadership after the 2021 World Cup, especially with a focus on the 2023 World Cup.
However, Ganguly as well as the remainder of the BCCI selection panel thought it made little sense to have two captains for the two limited-overs formats, so they recommended Kohli resign from his position as India's ODI captain as well. The situation got worse when the BCCI issued a tweet announcing that Rohit Sharma had been named the new India ODI captain without even acknowledging all that Virat Kohli had accomplished. After facing backlash from the public, Kohli's leadership as the skipper of the Indian team was praised by the BCCI, but the problem persisted.
After India lost the series in South Africa, a month later, Kohli unexpectedly announced his resignation as India's Test captain. The year 2022 had been especially terrible for Kohli, and it is thought that a large part of it was caused by his conflict with Ganguly along with the board. Kohli's hiatus and his comeback to form during the Asia Cup last year was undoubtedly a pendulum swing, but it all came to a head with his iconic staredown.
