The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has reportedly been approached by the BJP to join their party. Furthermore, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to pay a visit to the former India captain on Friday at his home in Behala.
During the 2021 general elections for the state assembly, there were many speculations about Ganguly entering politics. However, it never materialised. However, political parties are eager to have Ganguly's presence in their ranks due to his enormous popularity in Bengal.
The speculations that Amit Shah could discuss politics with Sourav Ganguly and his willingness to join the BJP have led to a major uproar in the Kolkata political scene. The BJP has always wanted to expand its presence in Bengal. The state is currently governed by the Trinamool Congress, which is led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Banerjee also met Ganguly for a discussion in July last year. Ganguly had seen Mamata Banerjee in her Nabanna chambers as they had discussed a sports ground that had been allocated to CAB. However, it is presently unused.
"If he (Shah) wants to go, what is the problem? Last time, too, he had visited some homes. Let him go. In fact, someone should tell Sourav to buy rosogolla and doi in excess. We have rosogolla and doi of very good quality, and we love to welcome our guests with it. I am happy to hear the news," said Mamta Banerjee, as quoted by My Khel
With Ganguly's tenure as the BCCI president coming to an end this year, the reports of him joining the BJP could be more credible. Notably, there have been no updates on him continuing the post as the BCCI president. This situation will give the party a massive boost.
Notably, when Ganguly was hospitalised last year due to a Covid-19 infection, both Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted him to check on his health.
