The first One Day match between South Africa and England, which going to take place on Friday at Cape Town, has been postponed. It was overdue after a South African player tested positive for Covid-19. Cricket South Africa made the postponement confirmation of the match on Twitter.
The CEO of the ECB, Tom Harrison, discussed the interests of the safety and well-being of both teams. The CEO of CSA, Kugandrie Govender, also agreed to the decision of delaying the first fixture to Sunday. Both the teams had traveled to the stadium to prepare for the game. However, the match was officially called off an hour before the start.
The player in question will be in isolation till he clears the second test. A fresh round of tests is likely to take place ahead of the series opener in Paarl on Sunday. This will result in consecutive ODI matches on Sunday and Monday in Paarl and Cape Town respectively. The series will conclude at Newlands on Wednesday.
The decision places a focus on the South African camp and their protocols during a series. The current situation will provide much-needed revenue for the struggling South Africa board.
England stands second on the CWC Super League points table
Two more players were tested positive before the Twenty20 International series that started on November 27. One Proteas player was tested positive on November 19, and the others were tested positive on November 21. England won the series 3-0. They will be looking to stay on the winning momentum in the ODI series as well when they will take the field on Sunday.
Thus, more worrying will be the positive cases from within the bio-bubble, where both teams have stayed since November 17.
Considering the CWC Super League points, both sides will be eager to put in strong performances. The series is South Africa's first in the tournament, but a 3-0 series loss has placed them 11th on the points table standings. The second spot currently is occupied by England who is 10 points off Australia in first.
