Mumbai is always known to produce champion sides year after year. They even managed to re-buy most of their team in the 2018 mega auction. However, this season they had a different approach when they sat down in the auction room. It was the concern of many that it seemed that the team was being built for the next season rather than the current one and Jofra Archer was the main talking point from their picks.
Archer is not available to play for this season but entered the auction intending to participate in the 2023 season. Mumbai purchased him for a sum of 8 crores after they got Ishan Kishan for 15.25 crores, this left them with little to build the rest of their team.
Speaking of Mumbai's picks this season, Bradd Hogg on his YouTube channel said, "Spending 8Cr on Archer is a huge risk, especially after spending 15 crores on Ishan Kishan. He's had two elbow surgeries in the last 18 months, that's the worst injury a fast bowler could have. They have a formidable top order in Rohit, Kishan, and Surya and then David at No.4, which is also a risk. Who's going to bat at No.5 is the big question."
"The bowling department is where their headache starts. They don't have depth in their bowling and not many top-class spinners. They also don't have finishers like the Pandya brothers. This is one of the worst auctions MI has ever had," he added.
Tim David, Tymal Mills, and Daniel Sams are some other overseas players that Mumbai has invested in. All these players are likely to make it to the playing XI for Mumbai as they do not have many other options. Mumbai will have to manage with limited options this season, and look for more options next year.
