Split captaincy won’t work in India: VVS Laxman

Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman believes split captaincy is something that will not work in Indian cricket. The former batsman described why the England team had found success with Eoin Morgan and Joe Root as skippers, but India may struggle if they go the same direction. Many believe Rohit Sharma should be the man to lead India in white-ball format. The opening batsman has guided Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles. Thus it is believed that Hitman can do a better job with India’s white-ball team.

In a recent interview with News18, VVS Laxman briefly talked about the split captaincy debate. He explained why Virat Kohli is the perfect all-format captain for Team India. England is one of the cricket teams that have found resounding success with split captaincy. Eoin Morgan has changed England into a fearsome white-ball team, which saw them lift the 2019 World Cup. Joe Root has improved England’s form in Test cricket over the past few years. VVS Laxman feels England’s team composition allows them to have two skippers, something which is not feasible in Indian cricket.

The chatter around Virat Kohli’s leadership skills is unnecessary: VVS Laxman

India’s 3-1 triumph against England in the Test series has taken the heat off Virat Kohli when it comes to the captaincy dispute. After Ajinkya Rahane guided India to a series win in Australia, many proposed that he should take over the captaincy reins from Virat Kohli in Test matches. However, veteran batsman VVS Laxman is firmly against the idea, saying that the chatter around Virat Kohli’s captaincy is unnecessary. The former also praised India’s current squad, highlighting that the team has a strong core.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli returned to form with a sparkling 73* against England on Sunday, March 14. He guided the Men in Blue to victory and levelled the five-match series 1-1. Remarkably, Virat Kohli managed to surpass an incredible T20I record which was previously held by vice-captain Rohit Sharma. England’s tour of India will now continue with the third T20I game on Tuesday, March 16. After the T20Is, both India and England will play a set of three ODIs in Pune to cap-off the two-month-long tour.
