Former Australia captain Steve Waugh feels Justin Langer will continue to be Australia's head coach irrespective of what happens in the Ashes series at home. Australia are no doubt the favourites to retain the Ashes but Langer's stocks have certainly increased after the team won the 20-20 World Cup in the UAE.
The fact that Langer's position at the helm is being discussed now sounds weird after Australia became the 20-20 Champions. But Michael Clarke said on November 16 (Tuesday) that Langer might step down from the position after winning the Ashes at home. He felt that the head coach would want to go out on a high. However, Steve Waugh reckons Langer will continue as he knows the man from a long time.
"I talk to him regularly and he has never talked to me about stepping down or backing away from a challenge. His whole career he was up against it. He was always a player on the edge, the next one to be dropped and will he get into the side? In a lot of ways it motivates him. You see it again, when you think he is down he just comes back and succeeds (with the T20 World Cup win). That's just in his nature,' Waugh said according to The West Australian.
Langer's coaching contract is up for renewal after Australia's home summer and Steve Waugh reckoned Cricket Australia should think about what he has done for the team over the years. Langer took up the tough job when the team was embroiled in ball-tampering scandal in 2018 and three years down the line, to win the 20-20 World Cup is certainly a huge achievement.
