Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar backs opening batsman Rohit Sharma to perform well in the forthcoming England Tests. The veteran expects the Mumbaikar to repeat his performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup. Rohit Sharma has scored a record five centuries. This is by far the most in a single edition of a World Cup by any batsman. He achieved this feat in the ODI World Cup in England last year. Sunil Gavaskar believes that the right-handed batsman can repeat the feat this time around in red-ball cricket.

The upcoming Test series is set to mark the beginning of the second cycle of the ICC WTC

Rohit Sharma was one of the few Indian batters who looked in control against New Zealand in the ICC WTC final in Southampton. The opening batsman was not able to get a big score in the final. However, his solid technique is sure to give Indian fanatics confidence ahead of the five-match series against England. The forthcoming Test series is set to mark the beginning of the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

Rohit Sharma is going to have more responsibility as his opening partner Shubman Gill is injured. According to sources, Shubman Gill is going to miss the entire five-match series. However, BCCI has not made any official statement on the youngster's fitness. If the reports do turn out to be accurate, then Mayank Agarwal might be included in the team as Gill's replacement. The Indian cricket team also has KL Rahul in their squad and Bengal cricketer Abhimanyu Easwaran as a reserve. It will be interesting to see whom the management adds to the playing XI as an opener.

Rohit Sharma has so far featured in 39 Tests. In those matches, the batsman has amassed 2679 runs at an average of 46.2. He has also scored seven hundred and 12 fifties in the most extended format of the game. Needless to say, Rohit's luck with the bat will play a crucial role when India faces England in the five-match Test series.
