Royal Challengers Bangalore were in fantastic form in the now-suspended 14th season of the Indian Premier League. The Bangalore-based franchise won five out of seven outings. RCB was one of the favorites to make it to the playoffs. Former India opening batsman Sunil Gavaskar has now listed reasons for the success of Royal Challengers Bangalore. The veteran claimed that Proteas batsman AB de Villiers was brilliant, and Devdutt Padikkal has a great future in all three formats of the game. Despite these two great players, the former batting great also named Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell as the surprise package. Gavaskar stated that Glenn Maxwell played the same way he plays for his national team.
Siraj has improved a lot ever since he returned from Australia earlier this year: Gavaskar
After being released by KL Rahul's Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2022 mini-auction, Maxwell was bought by Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for a whopping amount of Rs 14.25 crore. Punjab Kings had acquired his services for Rs 10.74 crore. The 32-year-old batsman had faced a lot of criticism last year after scoring just 108 runs in 13 games. Despite his image as a big-hitter, Glenn Maxwell has failed to make a consistent impression in the Indian Premier League. In 82 IPL games, he has scored 1505 runs at an average of 22.13 and a strike rate of 154.67. Maxwell's best IPL campaign came in 2014 when he scored 552 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 187.75.
Unlike the previous season, RCB posed severe threats to their opponents in the 14th IPL season. They had an outstanding start to their campaign as they went on to win five out of their seven games to climb to the third spot in the IPL 2021 table. But, unfortunately, several players and support staff had tested positive to Covid-19, which ended RCB's chance to clinch their maiden IPL trophy.
Sunil Gavaskar also praised pacer Mohammed Siraj who was RCB frontline bowler in the tournament. The batting great reckoned that the right-arm pacer has improved a lot ever since he returned from the Australia tour earlier this year. Having impressed with his capability to swing the red-ball, Siraj won many hearts by showing his skill and variation with the white-ball for RCB.
