Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar stated that the only clarification for Rahane's wicket was that he was eager to get to his fifty. Ajinkya Rahane was on 49 off 177 when he played a pull shot off a delivery from Neil Wagner. The vice-captain played the shot just to take a single, but he was caught by Tom Latham. Sunil Gavaskar was not happy with Rahane's dismissal and expressed his anger during the commentary. However, the former stated that he was just looking to complete his half-century somehow.
Gavaskar further reckoned that credit must be given to the NZ skipper Kane Williamson. He had set up the trap for Rahane, and bowler Wagner executed it perfectly. Ajinkya Rahane as a batsman never shies away from playing the shot whenever the ball is pitched short. However, at times this is what brings his downfall as it did on Sunday in the WTC final.
Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane were the top-scorers for their side
On Day three, New Zealand opening batsman Devon Conway scored a half-century, but soon after, he was removed by Ishant Sharma for 54 runs. The Kiwis ended Day 3 on a decent note with 101/2. Skipper Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor will continue on Day 4. Once again, the lousy light forced stumps as the umpires took the call to head back. Tom Latham and Devon Conway gave New Zealand a much-needed solid start. The duo added 70 runs for the first wicket in the last session on Day 3. However, it was Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who got the first breakthrough for India as he dismissed Latham.
Earlier, the Indian cricket team was bundled out for 217 runs in 92.1 overs. Young pacer Kyle Jamieson picked up a five-wicket haul. He has now scalped 42 Test wickets in 8 Test matches. Jamieson claimed the wickets of Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, whereas Trent Boult removed Ravindra Jadeja as India could add only six runs after Lunch on Day 3. Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane were the top scorers for their side with 44 and 49 runs, respectively. Both teams will go into Day 4, having an equal footing in the WTC Final. New Zealand is on 101/2 and trails India by 116 runs.
