Former Indian batsman VVS Laxman described Suryakumar Yadav as an exceptional T20 batsman, considering his all-round game. When India's T20 squad for the five-match series against England was declared, it included a few surprises. Youngsters Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tewatia earned their maiden India call-ups, but the one inclusion that had everyone talking was that of Suryakumar Yadav. Yadav was not a part of India's T20I squad for the Australia tour. That incident had created a lot of noise, with some former cricketers finding the batsman's exclusion baffling. Yadav was coming off a good IPL season for the Mumbai Indians. However, the selection committee decided not to include him in the squad.
The dynamic batsman was one of the star performers in the Mumbai Indians' title-winning run in the 2020 IPL. Yadav accumulated 480 runs in the entire tournament, at an impressive strike rate of 145.01. The 30-year-old will now hope to continue in the same vein and secure his spot in the Indian T20I team.
What Suryakumar Yadav has done is the right way to open the door: VVS Laxman
Yadav had a quiet Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but was in great form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He notched up scores of 50 against Delhi, 133 against Puducherry, and 91 against Himachal Pradesh recently. Laxman pointed out that Suryakumar Yadav has grabbed the opportunity with his achievements in domestic cricket and match-winning knocks for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
After the on-going Test series, India and England will face each other in the game's shortest format. The five-match T20 series will take place in Ahmedabad, starting from March 12.
