Delhi Capitals opener Shikhar Dhawan is amazed by the calm and composed nature of wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant. Dhawan stated that the way Pant led the team in his first match as captain was splendid. Rishabh Pant's captaincy task in the IPL got off to an impressive start as DC defeated Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets in their IPL 2021 opener in Mumbai. Pant was handed over the captaincy reins after regular skipper Shreyas Iyer sustained a shoulder injury. Iyer suffered the injury during the recent ODI series against England and was ruled out of the entire tournament.
Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Delhi jolted CSK early with a double strike. The duo of Suresh Raina and Moeen Ali threatened to take the match away, but Pant kept his calm to ensure that CSK did not bat his side out of the game. Despite having no first-choice pacers at his disposal, Rishabh Pant complied his troops to perfection.
Prithvi Shaw is a tremendous player to watch: Shikhar Dhawan
Over the years, Rishabh Pant has been very close to Shikhar Dhawan, and speaking post the CSK encounter, Dhawan expressed delight over how Pant fared on Saturday. He also mentioned that the 23-year-old's calmness is one of his biggest strengths as a captain. Apart from Pant's captaincy debut, the second IPL match saw Dhawan pick up right from where he left in 2020. The 35-year-old scored a brutal 54-ball 85 to grab the Man of the Match award and defeat the yellow army. Dhawan's knock was studded with two sixes and ten fours. He played shots all around the park and troubled CSK bowlers with his canny batting.
Dhawan reckoned that he enjoyed his batting but insisted that his approach was not new. He also pointed out his prolific 2020 campaign, where he scored at a strike rate of 144.73. Dhawan clinched the Man of the Match award, but the show-stealer of the day title belonged to young batsman Prithvi Shaw. The youngster turned his fortunes in the tournament with a stunning 38-ball 72. His great innings consisted of 9 fours and three sixes. Dhawan also lavished praise on Shaw and described him as a tremendous player to watch. Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals will next lock horns with Rajasthan Royals in Mumbai on Thursday, April 15.
