The Indian women’s team has the bowling attack to defend a total: Mithali Raj

Indian women ODI captain Mithali Raj has stated that the current bowling lineup of India is good enough to defend totals. The team has recently done that well against England. However, a lot depends on the rhythm of the player while they are on the field to bat or bowl.

Indian women ODI captain Mithali Raj has stated that the current bowling lineup of India is good enough to defend totals. The team has recently done that well against England. However, a lot depends on the rhythm of the player while they are on the field to bat or bowl.

In a pre-match conference ahead of the first ODI against England, Mithali Raj responded to why the Indian team preferred setting a target rather than chasing it down. According to her, the women’s team had successfully defeated totals in the past. The bowling lineup of the team is strong. The spinners have specially performed well irrespective of the wickets. Even during the 2017 World Cup in England, the bowling unit gave a good performance. It depends on how the players perform to put on a good total. The rhythm of the players also matters during the match.

The Indian women’s team had lost 1-4 to South Africa in their last ODI series at home. It was the team's first cricketing assignment a year after the break due to COVID-19. But Mithali Raj had an impressive run as she made scores of 50,36,45 and 79 not out.

What would Mithali Raj advise her 16-year-old self?

22 years ago on June 26, Mithali Raj had made her debut for India. She has established herself as one of the greatest batters in the history of Indian women's cricket.

In a recent interview, Mithali Raj stated the advice that she would give her 16-year-old self. She would ask her younger self to wait before celebrating as it is just the beginning of a long road. The game should be the main thought in mind. Although it had felt nice to get congratulatory messages, there was a lot of pressure. The expectation was huge and Raj had not realized the importance of wearing the blue jersey. She would want her 16-year-old self to enjoy the feeling of representing her country for the first time.

During the one-off Test against Bristol, Mithali Raj had scored just 2 and 4 runs before getting dismissed. However, the team played impressively to save their first Test match in seven years. Debutant players Sneh Rana and Taniya Bhatia had made 80 and 44 runs respectively for the ninth wicket. Thereby, the match was a draw between India and England.
