Punjab Kings batting coach Wasim Jaffer believes that KL Rahul will perform at his best in the upcoming IPL 2021 season. Indian batsman KL Rahul has had quite a memorable cricketing journey over the last few months. After warming the bench in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia as well as the Test series against England, Rahul returned to the Indian team in the T20Is.
The opening batsman struggled to score runs in the T20I series against England. He managed scores of 1, 0, 0 & 14 before he was dropped for the final T20I game. As a result, the Punjab Kings captain fell down a spot to sixth place in the latest ICC rankings for T20I batsmen. After being dropped from the 5th T20I, Rahul earned a spot in the playing XI for the first ODI game, where he bagged a half-century. The Karnataka lad did even better in the second ODI by registering a century.
Punjab Kings is more balanced this time: Wasim Jaffer
Rahul, who was the top-scoring player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) last season, was heavily criticized for his poor strike rate in the season. However, batting coach Wasim Jaffer feels cricket fanatics will see a more aggressive Rahul this time around. Defending KL Rahul's batting approach, Wasim Jaffer explained that it was the lack of reliable middle-order that forced the batsman to play the anchor's role at times and hold one end of the pitch as the other batsmen around him look to accelerate the run-rate. The batting coach also pointed out the team is a much more balanced side.
Punjab Kings is one of three IPL teams that are yet to win the IPL title. Thus, it would be interesting to see whether the new additions backed by KL Rahul's renewed approach can take them over the line this year. In the IPL 2021 auction, Punjab Kings went with the biggest purse and signed some big-name cricketers such as Dawid Malan, Jhye Richardson, and Fabian Allen. With a stable core, the franchise bolstered their squad by adding match-winners, and it would be interesting to see how they perform in the tournament. Wasim Jaffer is glorified by the new additions to the team and is looking forward to working with them during the season.
