There was a time when KL Rahul was the poster boy of Indian cricket. He was playing in an excellent form with belligerent stroke play in white-ball cricket. He had earned a lot of praise for beating England in a T20 home series. Even in Test cricket, he played brilliantly in the South African tour as an opener. He had even joined the 199-run club and the elite list of batters who have made 7 consecutive half-centuries in Test cricket.
KL Rahul was at his peak during those years and notable cricket experts had compared him with legendary cricketers from the past. When he is in the form then he can emerge as one of the best batters with the ability to play flawlessly in any format.
Everything was going well for KL Rahul before the series against England. He was selected to open the series against England with players like Stuart Board, James Anderson, and Chris Woakes bowling to him with the Duke's ball. It is one of the toughest challenges a player can face in the modern era of cricket.
Throughout the series, KL Rahul was either bowled or kept nicking off. In the final innings, he made 149 runs for India but cracks in his Test format batting form started getting visible after that series.
KL Rahul's confidence became low with a bad Test year during the 2018-19 season. Eventually, he was dropped in the Test series against Australia after repeated failures.
KL Rahul was in a good form in the 2019 World Cup
In the 2019 World Cup, he started as a middle-order batsman but was allowed to play as an opener after Shikhar Dhawan was injured. He played decently well and scored good runs for India. It was believed that he would play with similar confidence in Test matches as well.
But he failed to maintain his form in Test matches and was dumped from the team for white-ball matches.
Rahul is yet to play any Test match for India after his disappointing knock in the last Test match. But he has been selected to the Test squad that is in England for the five-match test series. With the injury of Shubman Gill, there are chances of Rahul getting selected to open for India again in the Test against England.
