Given the fact that we’ve entered the World Cup year in 2023; the Indian cricketing corridors are filled with multiple debates on the ‘workload management’ of players keeping a balance in international cricket alongside the franchise T20 leagues like IPL. Just a few days back, the current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and former head coach Ravi Shastri came up with some big statements on the injuries of players.
Subsequently, the Indian Premier League chairman Arun Dhumal has now come up with a big statement while hitting back at both Rohit and Shastri. Dhumal also mentioned former Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s name categorically to give his statement validation and a proper justification.
Just before the first match of Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023, their skipper Rohit Sharma said;
“It's all up to the franchises now. Franchises own them. We have given indications, some kind of borderline thing to teams, but at the end of the day, it's up to the franchise. I doubt that will happen, though.”
Prior to this statement from Rohit Sharma, the former Indian head coach came up with a suggestion for the Indian Cricket Board to decide their stance on the workload management of players by discussing it with the IPL franchises.
"You need that much cricket and you need to give certain breaks. Even if it happens to be IPL. Board has to take the stand there, tell the franchises, ‘Listen, we need them. India needs them. For India's sake, if he doesn't play those games, it will be good," said Shastri to Sports Yaari.
But now, IPL chairman Dhumal has come up with a closing and big statement on this entire debate on the workload management and injury issues with the players.
Does it have anything to do with the IPL? - Arun Dhumal while hitting back on Rohit Sharma and Ravi Shastri
“The problem in our country is that whosoever makes money, be it a company or individual, he is seen with suspicion. Virat Kohli has been playing IPL for so many years, he’s never been injured. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami never got injured. Does it have anything to do with the IPL?” said Dhumal to Indian Express.
"Shreyas Iyer got injured but not because of the IPL. Just because they make money through IPL, we start blaming IPL for anything and everything. Injuries are an integral part of any sport. Our badminton stars are getting injured. They don’t play in the IPL. There are so many stars who are coming from overseas and playing in the IPL,” he added later.
