Rajasthan beat Kolkata by seven runs in a high-scoring thriller in the 30th game of the tournament. Winning the toss, Kolkata decided to bowl first at the Brabourne Stadium. For Rajasthan, Jos Buttler gave the perfect start along with Devdutt Padikkal. The Englishmen did not waste any time and went berserk from ball one. The two added 60 runs in the powerplay and went on to add 97 together. Sunil Narine got the breakthrough for Kolkata as he dismissed Padikkal (24 runs in 18 balls) in the 10th over. Sanju Samson then joined Buttler, who had reached his half-century at this point.
The duo continued scoring well for the men in pink. Samson (38 runs in 19 balls) hit a few good shots before he was dismissed by Andre Russell in the 16th over. Buttler and Samson added 67 runs together. The scorecard read 164/2 in 15.2 at this time. Buttler continued his dominance as he hit a six in the 17th over to reach his second century of the season. However, Pat Cummins got rid of him in the same over with a short delivery. He added 103 runs in 61 balls, with nine fours and five sixes in the innings. Rajasthan was 183 in 16.4 overs.
Narine took his second wicket in the next over, dismissing Riyan Parag (5). In the 19th over, Shivam Mavi struck Karun Nair, who was playing his debut game for Rajasthan. Shimron Hetmyer (26 runs in 13 balls) then played a perfect cameo to take the team to a total of 217 in the first innings.
Chasing the big target, the men in purple decided to turn to Sunil Narine to open the innings for them. But, the strategy failed as he was run out by Hetmyer on the first ball of the innings. Captain Shreyas Iyer then joined Aaron Finch in the middle. The duo had a perfect powerplay and added 57 runs in the first six overs. Finch (58 runs in 28 balls) raced to his maiden half-century of the season but fell to Prasidh Krishna in the ninth over. The two added 107 runs on the board together.
Iyer was strong on one end, but wickets kept falling for the two-time champions from the other end. Nitish Rana (18) was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal in the 13th over. Andre Russell (0) was bowled out by Ashwin on the first ball that he faced in the 14th over. Venkatesh Iyer (6) was then dismissed by Chahal on the first ball of his last over.
Chahal then produced a miracle on the last three balls of his spell as he took a brilliant hat trick. He got the most important wicket of Iyer (85 runs in 51 balls) on the fourth ball. Shivam Mavi lofted a shot straight into Riyan Parag's hands on the next ball. Finally, Cummins edged the ball into the keeper's gloves. Chahal completed his hat trick and reached his five-wicket haul.
Umesh Yadav then struck some boundaries in the 18th over, leaving Kolkata 18 away from the target. Krishna conceded just seven runs in the penultimate over. Obed McCoy now had to defend 11 runs to win the match. Obed took the final two wickets as Rajasthan beat Kolkata by seven runs.
