On this very day 40 years back in the year 1983, the cricketing world witnessed one of the major historic turnarounds in the glory of the great game of cricket. The underdogs and underrated Team India were locking horns with the then two-time World Champions and mighty West Indies led by Clive Lloyd.
Nobody, including the West Indies skipper and management, would have expected the result that came that day. One of the most underrated teams of the tournament led by Kapil unexpectedly won their first-ever World Cup in the entire history of the game.

Speaking of the action of the match in that historic final between India and West Indies, the Caribbean skipper Clive Lloyd won the toss and challenged Kapil Dev’s India to face mighty West Indies’ pacers.
Batting first, India could post a total of 183 runs in 54.4 overs courtesy of Kris Srikkanth’s knock of 38 runs alongside 26 and 27 runs scored by Mohinder Amarnath and Sandeep Patil. Andy Roberts scalped three wickets alongside two wickets each claimed by Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, and Larry Gomes. The ‘whispering death’ Joel Garner also claimed one wicket.
While defending the target, Indian bowlers dramatically bundled up the West Indies on the score of 140 runs. Sir Viv Richards, who was looking dangerous for India scored 33 runs before getting caught in an amazing historic catch taken by skipper Kapil Dev.
Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath scalped three wickets each whereas Balwinder Sandhu claimed two wickets. Apart from this, skipper Kapil Dev and star pacer Roger Binny also picked one wicket each.
Mohinder Amarnath won the ‘Player of the Match award for his all-round match-defining performance.
