Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar opines that there should not be any pressure on Shreyas Iyer for his place in the Playing XI. The batsman has always found himself fighting for the no. 4 position. Shreyas Iyer had to bat at no. 5 in the first T20I against England, with Rishabh Pant getting promoted above him in the batting line-up. However, Iyer showcased his talent, smashing 67 runs in 48 balls, but it was not enough for India to win the game. The visitors chased down India's target of 125 runs with 8 wickets in hand to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Shreyas Iyer was the only performer for India in the first T20I game against England. Virat Kohli and the team fell like a pack of cards as they were restricted on a paltry score of 124/7 in 20 overs. This enabled Eoin Morgan & Co. to win the game easily after a successful run-chase inside 15.3 overs.
I feel Shreyas Iyer should continue playing all the T20 matches till the World Cup: Sanjay Bangar
Asked to bat first, the hosts lost openers KL Rahul (1), Shikhar Dhawan (4), and skipper Virat Kohli (0) cheaply. Shreyas Iyer staged a fightback along with Rishabh Pant, and the duo added 28 runs for the fourth wicket. After Pant's dismissal, Iyer added another crucial stand of 54 runs with Hardik Pandya, who scored 19 off 21 balls.
Shreyas Iyer played shots all around the ground and looked in great touch. His outstanding innings was laced with 8 fours and a six. However, his efforts were not enough to help India to a match-winning total. Nonetheless, Iyer consolidated his position in the middle order with his incredible performance and earned praise from many cricket experts, including ex-India batting coach Sanjay Bangar.
Supporting him to be India's no.4 for T20 World Cup, Bangar praised Iyer's brilliant knock in the first T20 match. He stated that Iyer should not be under pressure in regards to his position in the Indian team. With Suryakumar Yadav also in the brawl to bat at no.4, many believe Iyer's place in the team might be in danger. It remains to be seen what position Yadav will play if handed T20I debut in the ongoing series against England. Team India will face England in the second of the five-match series on March 14 (Sunday).
