Notably, it is the World Cup year and most of the national teams are gearing up for the marquee tournament to be played in India later this year in the month of October and November. Meanwhile, the cash-rich franchise tournament, none other than the Indian T20 League is underway having some renowned international players in the tournament.

Speaking from the point of view of Team India, they haven’t won any major international tournament since 2013 when they lifted the Champions Trophy in 2013 under the captaincy of former legendary skipper MS Dhoni.

Amidst all these, Indian Cricket Board has also introduced some important tests like Yo-Yo and Dexa as the criteria for the selection of players in the national side.

On the other hand, the former legendary skipper Sunil Gavaskar has dropped a bombshell with his recent remarks on the workload management of Indian players in relation to their national duties and participation in the Indian T20 League.

“It was refreshing to hear the Mumbai Indians’ coach Mark Boucher pooh-pooh the workload question, saying that a 20-overs-a-side game isn’t a lot of workloads,” wrote Gavaskar in his recent article for Mid-Day.

“Just before the IPL started in 2008, there was a lot of noise about burnout started by a players’ organization. As soon as the players realized what the IPL was offering in terms of remuneration for maybe a dozen or so T20 games, the message must have gone out to the organization to just drop the burnout discussion,” he added later.

Later on, Gavaskar also reckoned that the word ‘workload’ has come up as an excuse for the new-gen players not appear to fulfill the national duty for their country.

'You can't have a captain who is there for one match and not there for others, when it comes to the World Cup, you can't have a family commitment," said the 1983 World Cup winner batter.
