Recently, the former cricketing greats of India including the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri batted for KL Rahul’s inclusion in the playing XI as wicketkeeper-batter for the much-anticipated and high-voltage Test Championship 2023 final.
These former greats thought that KS Bharat was not that impactful in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia; although Bharat appeared in only four to six matches.
This analysis from Shastri and Gavaskar didn’t go down well with the former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. He looked pissed with this analysis of KS Bharat only after six matches and the inclusion of KL Rahul in the eleven only on emotional grounds.
“They came to know in just four matches that KS Bharat is not a good wicketkeeper? And in those four matches, some of the big batters also failed to score runs. They are questioning his batting and wicketkeeping in just four matches?” said Gambhir to Sports Today.
These ex-cricketers should know how important wicketkeeping is - Gautam Gambhir
“These former cricketers who are questioning and doubting his abilities should first take a look at themselves to see how long they had flopped and how big a run they had gotten. These ex-cricketers should know how important wicketkeeping is and that one missed chance can change the entire match,” he added later.
Gambhir wanted to make a point that the former greats of the game should understand the fact that wicketkeeping is some job in cricket that completely needs a perfectionist. You can’t go ahead with a part-time batter in such a crucial all-important match and that too in England.
Interestingly, KL Rahul was not a part of the playing XI of Team India in the last two Tests of the recently-concluded four-match Test series against Australia. He couldn’t deliver up to the expectations in the first two Tests and carried away his poor run of form with the bat.
