Former England skipper and legendary batter Sir Alastair Cook looked surprised by the defensive approach of the Australian team on the first day of the first Test of The Ashes 2023. Notably, Pat Cummins & Co. are coming off with a historic title win in the World Test Championship 2023 final.

But the World Test Championships didn’t look in a dominant position against Ben Stokes-led England side on the first day of the first Ashes Test at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. The Three Lions managed to put in a total of 393 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 78 overs before they declared their first innings.

The opening batter Zak Crawley amazed everyone with a spectacular drive on the first ball of the match bowled by the Aussie skipper Pat Cummins. This attacking attitude of the English batters made the Aussies put their guys in deep just within a few overs after the start of the game.

Considering this kind of defensive approach quite opposite to the nature of the Australian teams and their values or approach on the field, former England skipper Sir Alastair Cook called out the Aussie leadership while talking on BBC Test Match Special at the end of the first day.

“It feels a bit un-Australian. They normally fight fire with fire,'. I've never seen Australia with four men on the boundary," said Sir Alastair Cook on BBC Test Match Special.

Here's what Sir Alastair Cook further for Australia

"They have got it wrong, but from an England perspective, it is fantastic to see Australia so defensive. I just think the first morning of an Ashes series, I would have thought that Pat Cummins would have said, 'OK England, give it a go. We don't mind. Hit us for six fours … a couple of sixes, no problem. Then we will go to plan B. I think that they went straight to plan B," he added later.
