After losing the series opener, team India took on South Africa in Ranchi for the second ODI. All 20-20 World Cup-bound players are not part of this series. Hence, a young Indian side were looking to win this match to keep themselves alive in the series. On the other hand, the Proteas were looking to seal the series with one more match to go. However, both teams made some changes in their playing XIs from the last match.

Temba Bavuma and Tabraiz Shamsi did not find a place. In their place, Bjorn Fortuin and Reeza Hendricks came into the playing XI. On the other hand, India brought in Washington Sundar and Shahbaz Ahmed in place of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravi Bishnoi in their playing XI. However, stand-in keeper Keshav Maharaj won the toss and they elected to bat first.

India defeated South Africa by seven wickets in the second ODI

For South Africa, Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan came out to open the inning. However, both these players departed with low scores. Proteas managed only 40 runs for two wickets in 9.5 overs. Then, Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram stitched a solid partnership of 129 runs. Hendricks scored 74 runs off 76 balls, including nine fours and a six. Along with him, Markram scored 79 runs off 89 balls, including seven fours and one six. Miller also scored 35* runs off 34 balls as South Africa scored 278 runs for seven wickets in 50 overs. For India, Mohammed Siraj took three wickets for 38 runs in 10 overs.

In reply, the skipper Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill came out to open. But, both of them departed after scoring 13 and 28 runs respectively. Then, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer put up a partnership of 161 runs. Ishan Kishan scored 93 runs off 84 balls, including four boundaries and seven sixes. Then, Shreyas Iyer continued his inning as he managed to smash an ODI ton. He remained not out on 113 runs off 111 balls, including 15 fours. Thus, India won the match by seven wickets to spare.
