Mumbai beat Chennai in a low-scoring affair by five wickets in the 59th match of the Indian T20 League 2022. Both teams' bowling performances were outstanding, and ensured that the match was topsy-turvy, and didn't favour one side. With this win, Mumbai dismissed the chances of Chennai qualifying for the playoffs.

Mumbai won the toss and elected to bowl first at their fortress, Wankhede. Chennai got off to the worst possible start with the bat. On the second ball of the innings, they lost the in-form Devon Conway (0). A power outage at the stadium prevented him from using the DRS. Following then, wickets continued to fall for the men in yellow. Half of their team were sent back after scoring 29 runs in 5.4 overs.

Only MS Dhoni had some impact on the innings. Mumbai bowlers, on the other hand, were great throughout the innings. Daniel Sams and Jasprit Bumrah provided the early breakthroughs, and Riley Meredith and Kumar Kartikeya took the charge in middle overs. While Sams grabbed three wickets in the innings, Meredith and Kartikeya each took two. Bumrah and Ramandeep Singh both got one wicket each. Chennai managed 97 runs in the first innings. Dhoni (36) was their highest run-scorer of the match.

Chennai ensured that Mumbai don't get to a good start in the second innings as Mukesh Choudhary and Simarjeet Singh ripped through Mumbai's top-order. They bowled brilliantly on a two-paced wicket and put the batters under pressure. Mumbai were reduced to 33/4 at this point. Both ended their quota in the first spell itself. Choudhary ended with the figures of 23/3, and Singh ended with the figures of 22/1.

Hrithik Shokeen and Tilka Varma built an important partnership that stabilized the innings for Mumbai. The duo added 48 runs for the fifth-wicket partnership. In the end, Tim David walked in after Shokeen (18) fell in the 13th over. David hit two sixes in the 15th over to win the match for Mumbai. Thus they beat Chennai by five wickets.
