The first Test of much-awaited India vs Australia Test series finally got underway on Thursday in Nagpur. The Australian captain called it correctly at the toss and elected to bat first. The Indian team handed the debut caps to two players Suryakumar Yadav and KS Bharat. Suryakumar was handed his debut cap by the former head coach Ravi Shastri while Bharat was given his cap by Cheteshwar Pujara.

Suryakumar took T20Is by storm with his breathtaking strokeplay as he notched up over 1000 runs in 2022. His marvellous numbers saw him rise to the top of the Men’s T20I Player’s Rankings. He was rewarded for his T20I performance and got selected in the Indian team for the first two Tests against Australia.

The Mumbai-batter has played 79 First Class matches scoring 5549 runs at an average of 44.75 with the help of 14 hundreds and 28 fifties. Other than the two debutants, there was one surprise inclusion in the playing eleven which was of KL Rahul. Rahul has failed to reach the fifty-run mark in the last seven innings in Tests. The team management decided to bench the in-form Shubman Gill to make way for Rahul.

Gill recently scored a hundred in the previous Test series against Bangladesh and has carried his form in limited-overs cricket.

Australia handed the debut cap to Todd Murphy

On the other hand, Australia handed the debut cap to Todd Murphy. "We are going to bat. Looks like a pretty even wicket towards the middle. 2017 was a big series. Can't wait to get this started. We have had good preparation. We feel we are really well placed. Two changes Todd Murphy in. Handscomb in for Travis Head," Pat Cummins said at the toss.

After electing to bat first, Australia lost their openers Mohammed Shami and David Warner early and were 40/2 after 17 overs.

Teams:

Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Matt Renshaw, Peter Handscomb, Alex Carey(w), Pat Cummins(c), Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Scott Boland

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma(c), KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Srikar Bharat(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj
