Ruturaj Gaikwad has been a great find for the Chennai team in the last two seasons. He has been a great player at the top of the order and won the orange cap last season. However, he has suffered a minor injury in recent times and is currently recovering at the National Cricket Academy.
He might not be available for them in the initial few matches of the season. Devon Conway is speculated to be one of the openers for the season, and Ruturaj was to be the other. In his absence, here are the possible options that Chennai can look at.
Ambati Rayudu
Ambati Rayudu has been a phenomenal player in the Indian T20 League. He has been a very important player for the two teams that he has played for, Mumbai and Chennai. He was brought back by the Chennai team at the mega auction and is sure to start in the playing XI. Rayudu is a floater in the team and can play different roles. He has good experience as an opener and would be a good pairing with Devon Conway.
Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa came in Chennai's playing XI last season after Suresh Raina suffered an injury. He did well for them in the few matches that he played and was consistent. This time, Uthappa can move up in the batting order due to another injured player. He is a proven opener and has opened for several teams, including team India.
Moeen Ali
Moeen Ali has come as a saviour for Chennai at number three. He did exceptionally well for them in the last season. Moeen too is a floater and can bat at the top of the order. He has very little experience at the top but can surely play that role. Moeen last played as an opener when he was in the Bangalore team. He did not do as well as expected. This time, he would like to make the most if he gets the opportunity.
