India is all set to take on West Indies in a three-match ODI series, starting on the 22nd of July. Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and other veteran Indian players, including Rohit Sharma, have all been rested for the series. This has allowed some young players to prove their worth in the series. While Shikar Dhawan is sure to open the innings for India, the second position is up for grabs. Here are the players who can open the innings with Dhawan for the first ODI against West Indies.

Ishan Kishan

The wicketkeeper-batter is the first choice to open the innings along with Shikhar Dhawan in the first ODI match. The 24-year-old has started to appear frequently in T20I matches but hasn't featured in many ODI matches. He has so far been used by the team as a floater, but he could get to open this time.

Kishan has played three games in the 50-over format thus far, scoring 88 runs at an average of 29.3 He would want to make sure he takes full advantage of this chance to solidify his position in the Indian team for ODIs.

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill has established himself as a Test specialist in the Indian team. He does not play a lot of white-ball cricket these days, but is all set to make his comeback in the series against West Indies. Gill last played an ODI game against Australia in December 2020.

Gill made his ODI debut in 2019 and has only played three games since then. In three games for India, he managed to score 49 runs at an average of 16.3. The 22-year-old will be eyeing a comeback to the playing XI on the backs of a decent season in the Indian T20 League 2022.

Ruturaj Gaikwad

Ruturaj Gaikwad is yet to make his ODI debut for India. He has played in a few T20I matches, however, he has primarily served as a bench warmer. In order to prove a point, he would be competing for a spot on the Indian Playing XI in this series.

The 25-year-old has proved his worth in the Indian T20 League playing for Chennai but is yet to make a mark in the Indian team. He also has some good stats in domestic cricket. In 64 List-A games, he has scored 3284 runs at an average of 54.7.
