Tim Paine has justified why the management did not select Travis Head for the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Australian wicket-keeper said the left-hander missed out because of the dynamics of the team. The team management has changed after the appearance of all-rounder Cameron Green. Tim Paine further added that Head was unfortunate not to make it in the XI for Sydney Test.
Travis Head performed well in the Melbourne Test as he managed to get scores of 38 and 17. However, the southpaw has again failed to kick on and contribute with a big score. Tim Paine explained why the team management ruled the batsman out of the remaining two matches.
The Australian side decided to shift wicket-keeper batsman Matthew Wade in his original batting position. He is now going to bat in the middle-order after the opening in the first two Tests and T20Is. The Australian team opted to go in with Will Pucovski and David Warner as new opening pair in Sydney. Because of this, Travis Head had to make way from the playing XI. The 27-year-old had a wretched voyage in the first Test against India. The batsman only managed seven runs in the first innings.
Travis Head has not convinced me at any point: Ian Chappell
Former Australia captain Ian Chappell recently criticised Travis Head and felt there were far too many vulnerabilities in his game to be a Test batsman.
Travis Head and his inability to convert into big scores were a big concern for the Australian team management. As Tim Paine highlighted, if one looks at Head's average in Test cricket, it seems fine. The 27-year-old has featured in 19 Tests and has scored 1153 runs at a decent standard of 39.76.
However, because of intense competition for international cricket places, a batsman needs to keep making those big scores. He should showcase his ability to win games for his team. Travis Head has managed to hit seven fifties and two centuries in his entire career. This also displays his lack of ability to play significant and impactful knocks.
Will Pucovski was Australia's 460th test player. In his debut, he scored 62 runs off 110 deliveries. His innings comprised of four boundaries. The batsman handed over Navdeep Saini his maiden dismissal in Test cricket.
