In what it seems to be a major blow for Team India, middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is set to miss the first of the four-match Test series against Australia. Notably, India and Australia will lock horns in the first Test at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday, the 9th of February.
He is reported to be available for the selection by the second of the four-match Test series against the Aussies. So, the 28-year-old will be missing the Indian camp in Nagpur for the Test series opener which is scheduled to be started on the 2nd of February. Meanwhile, he will go under rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy of Bengaluru.
“His injury hasn’t healed as expected and he will take two weeks at least to play cricket again. He will certainly not be available for the first Test and his availability for the second Test will be subject to his fitness report,” said a source in Indian Cricket Board.
Although amidst all these, the World's number one T20I batter and star Indian batting sensation Suryakumar Yadav is likely to make his Test debut in Iyer’s absence. But it seems that this hasn’t gone down well with the Indian Cricket Fans and they want young Indian batter Sarfaraz to be handed the debut Test cap. Fans took to Twitter to express their dissent on preferring Suryakumar Yadav ahead of Sarfaraz Khan.
Here's how fans reacted:
If Iyer is injured then bring in Sarfaraz rather than handing the test cap to Surya. And if the selectors have issues with sarfaraz then please bring in Hanuma vihari or rahane . #INDvsAUS #sarfaraz #shreyasiyer #testcricket #BorderGavaskarTrophy #SuryakumarYadav

India's struggle against good spinners is well documented, so it will be interesting how they play against Lyon on some turning tracks in the BGT. They will hope that #RohitSharma #Pujara and #ShreyasIyer score a lot of runs. They play spin best. #INDvAUS #INDvsAUS

Coming back to Shreyas Iyer, the Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah had also informed about the former’s injury a few weeks ago before the three-match ODI series against New Zealand.
“Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management,” said Shah in a statement.
