Today marks the 10th year anniversary of India’s historic win in the 2011 ICC World Cup. India defeated Sri Lanka in the final to win the prestigious trophy after 28 years. The team lost one match in the entire tournament - against South Africa, and one match with England resulted in a stalemate.

Reliving old memories, here are India’s 3 most crucial victories in the 2011 World Cup:

3. India vs Pakistan (Semi-Final)

India vs Pakistan is arguably the most anticipated match in the history of cricket. On 30th March 2018, the two behemoths locked horns in the semis of the 2011 World Cup. Indian skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to put Pakistan on to field first. Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar stole the show against the Men in Green. Sachin’s knock of 85 helped India post a total of 260 on the board. In reply, Pakistan got off to a rather slow start. Indian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Pakistani cricketer Misbah-ul-Haq's superb innings of 56 went in vain as India eventually won the match by 29 runs.

2. India vs Australia (Quarter-Final)

India drew Australia in the quarterfinals of the 2011 World Cup. Both these cricketing giants were considered favorites to win the World Cup. After Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss, he decided to put India to bowl first. Ponting played an outstanding knock of 104, building a solid partnership with Brad Haddin, who scored 53 runs. Australia went to post a total of 260. In reply, India got off to a shaky start. Sehwag was dismissed early. Tendulkar and Gambhir helped stabilize the Indian innings with a 50 run partnership. Prior to the duo’s dismissal, Yuvraj and Raina took it upon themselves, guiding India to the victory line. With 14 balls left to bowl, India successfully chased the total with 5 wickets in hand.

1. India vs Sri Lanka (Final)

The stage was set at the Wankhede Stadium for the 2 finalists to battle it out for the ultimate glory. Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and put India on to field first. Mahela Jayawardene was arguably Sri Lanka’s best batsman that day. His sublime knock of 103* helped Sri Lanka post a total of 276 on the board. In reply, India got off to a horrible start. Lasith Malinga sent Sehwag and Tendulkar back to the pavilion in a short span of time. Gambhir and Kohli stabilized India’s innings before Kolhi was dismissed. In stepped the Indian skipper MS Dhoni. Captain cool was at his coolest that day, smashing 91 runs and guiding India to victory in the 49th over.
