Steve Smith made his Test debut against Pakistan as an all-rounder. Smith was then added to the Ashes squad as a leg-spinner who could bat. His journey in the Australian team has been filled with ups and downs. But his journey has been a memorable one so far.

Since his first match, Smith established himself as the best batter of his generation in the Test format. He also got the opportunity to lead the Australian team on many occasions. To date, Smith has scored 7540 runs in 77 Test matches including 27 centuries and 31 fifties. He has an excellent average of 61.80.

Smith's five career-best innings in Tests

192 runs vs India

On the 2014 boxing day match against India, Smith probably gave his best performance. It was the match where MS Dhoni announced his retirement from Test Cricket. Steve Smith batted for 433 minutes in that match and scored 192 runs against the Indian attack.

199 vs West Indies

In the 2015 match in Jamaica, West Indies bowlers had sliced open the Australian batting line without mercy. That was when Smith stepped up and played the entire innings. He went on to become the only Australian to be bowled out while batting at 199. He played that match with the perfect stance. His back foot move was neat and dominated the bounce that was on offer on that surface.

109 vs India

At Pune in 2017, we got another immaculate game from Smith where he gave a masterclass on how to play spin. In those Tests, the Indian team was bowled out for 105 and 107 in both innings. But Australia still needed Smith to step up and play the Indian spin. He made a century in that innings and helped his side win by 33 runs.

144 & 142 vs England

It was Steve Smith’s comeback match to Test Cricket after being banned because of the sandpaper gate scandal. He proved his worth in the first innings and smashed 144 runs for Australia. Smith then went on to hit another 142 runs in the second innings against England.

The crowd welcomed him on the field with boos but he managed to turn it to a standing ovation at the end. Australia won the match by 251 runs against England. Smith was the biggest run contributor with his bat in the two innings.

He managed to entertain the crowd and proved himself as an integral part of the Australian team. It was one of the important matches of his life after the sandpaper scandal. That match helped him gained back some of his lost reputations and made him the crowd favorite once again.
