Virat Kohli will go down as the greatest Indian captain in the record books. Kohli became the captain of the Test side in 2015, after MS Dhoni decided to retire from the longest format of the game. At the time of his appointment, the Indian team was at the seventh position in the rankings.

Kohli took the Indian team to the number one position in October 2016 and the team remained occupied the top spot for a period of 42 months, till March 2020. Kohli announced his decision to step down a day after India lost the three-match Test series to South Africa by a 2-1 margin. He was absent from the second Test due to a back spasm as India lost the match by seven wickets. India were the favorite to win this series, but the batters were not able to perform as expected

Under Kohli, India achieved a number of laurels, including playing the final of the inaugural Test Championship against New Zealand last year. The responsibility of leading the side brought out the best in Kohli. He scored seven double-centuries, which is the most by a captain in Test cricket. 1. Most Wins for an Indian captain

Kohli captained India in 68 Test matches, which is the most for an Indian captain. Under his captaincy, India won 40 matches, lost 17 and 11 matches ended in a draw. Kohli is the most successful Indian captain both in terms of matches won and win percentage.

During the first Test match against South Africa in Centurion, Kohli became the first Asian captain to win a Test match at this venue. Overall, he was the third captain to win a match in Centurion. Kohli also became the first Asian captain to win two Boxing Day affairs. India defeated Australia in the Boxing Day Test during the 2018-19 series.

2. Four overseas wins in a calendar year

Kohli became the first Indian captain to win four overseas Test matches in a calendar year. He went to achieve this feat twice during his captaincy career.

In 2018, India won matches in Johannesburg, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Nottingham. In 2021, India again won four overseas matches in Brisbane, Centurion, Oval, and Lord’s.

3. Virat Kohli never lost a Test series in India

India played 13 Test series at home under Kohli and never lost a series. Kohli won 24 matches in India which is also the record for most Test wins at home as captain.

Kohli won 16 out of 36 Test matches in overseas conditions. In SENA nations, Kohli won seven out of 23 matches, which is the most for an Asian captain. After winning the Centurion Test, Kohli became the first Indian captain to win two Test matches in the rainbow nation.
