The return of Cricket at the grand stage of the Commonwealth Games began on Friday as Australia and Indian women clashed at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. Indian Captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to bat first. The excitement at the ground was palpable as both the teams took the field to mark the opening of the ‘Women’s Cricket Competition’.
Indian batters came out with a clear intent of going hard early on as they took on the Australian bowlers. The openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana were looking good at the crease. After some initial flurry of runs, Australia finally drew first blood as India lost their first wicket on the score of 25 after 3.3 overs. After losing the first wicket, Shafali Verma kept playing positively as she marched on scoring boundaries all around the ground.
The swashbuckling batter fell two runs short of her half-century as she was dismissed by Jess Jonassen. After losing Verma, the Indian innings was held together by captain Harmanpreet Kaur who put her fearless strokeplay on display as she brought up her half-century. The Indian team finished their innings with the score of 154/8.
The Australian innings had a bizarre start as they lost Alyssa Healey on the second ball of the over. The Kangaroos weren’t even given a chance to breathe as Renuka Singh wreaked havoc on their batting lineup.
Australia were left reeling at 49/5 as India had a firm grip on the match. The duo of Ashleigh Gardner and Grace Harris added 51 runs for the sixth wicket to resuscitate the Australian innings. India came back into the game with a double strike ending the partnership and then getting another wicket to leave Australia struggling at 110/7 after 14.2 overs.
Some smart batting by tailender Alana King and well-set Gardner turned the game on its head as the duo added 47 runs for the eighth wicket, guiding Australia to a three-wicket-victory with six balls to spare.

#CommonwealthGames #Cricket #IndiavsAustralia Not the start after that Indian Women's team imagined ! Letting the match go after being on top shows that they do not have the killer's instinct to crush the opposition & get the victory.

@BCCIWomen @BCCI what a team at @commonwealthsec games. Totally disappointed bowling. Wayward. @ImHarmanpreet is a total waste of a captain. Primary school level bowling. @cricketcomau did a hammering. #IndiavsAustralia https://t.co/6jjZwgcxVE

They’re not far off actually tbf. India ran England and Australia very close in ODI series last year in their backyards. And at the recent WC too, very competitive in the games vs SEA. They just gotta rectify snatching those little key moments

#CWG #IndiavsAustralia Indian bowlers became very complacent after getting Australian team 40 for 5 should have defended this total. #WomensCricket

India lost from a winning position, Australia never stopped at any moment. You can't beat a team whose #8 and#9 play better/fast than our top order. Aussies don't see fielders I guess, explored gaps well. On to Sunday vs Pak.. Wish them all the best #CommonwealthGames
