Former Indian captain and the current head coach of the Indian cricket team Rahul Dravid is celebrating his 49th birthday today, January 11. Dravid is one of the veterans of Indian cricket. He made his Test debut in June 1996 against England at the Lord’s Cricket Ground and played his last Test against Australia in Adelaide in January 2012. During a 16 year Test career, he scored 13288 runs in 164 Test matches at an average of 52.31 and made 36 centuries and 63 half-centuries. He scored a century against all the Test-playing nations.

Dravid made his ODI debut in April 1996 against Sri Lanka and hung up his boot after playing his last ODI against England in September 2011. Dravid made 10889 runs in 344 ODIs at an average of 39.16 and a strike rate of 71.23. He hit 12 centuries and 83 half-centuries during his ODI career.

Post retiring, Dravid took up the coaching role and worked with India A and Under 19 team. He is often credited for creating a strong bench strength for India. After India's dismal performance in the 20,-20 World Cup, Dravid was appointed as India's head coach.

Under Dravid’s coaching India defeated New Zealand in both T20I and Test series. The Indian team is currently playing a Test series in South Africa which is to be followed by an ODI series. India won the first Test match in Centurion and South Africa came back to win the second Test in Johannesburg. The ongoing Centurion Test will decide the fate of the series.

Before joining the Indian team, Dravid served as the director of the National Cricket Academy.
