The opening game of the 15th season of Indian T20 League saw Kolkata win against Chennai in a one-sided game. After winning the toss, the newly-appointed Kolkata skipper Shreyas Iyer decided to field first. The defending champions had a forgettable start as they lost five wickets for 61 runs. Last year Orange Cap winner Ruturaj Gaikwad got out on a four-ball duck. His new opening partner, Devon Conway could only score three.

Robin Uthappa (28) started well but his innings was cut short by a wide delivery from Varun Chakravarthy. The former was stumped by Sheldon Jackson. Ambati Rayudu (15) was run-out due to a misunderstanding with his new skipper Ravindra Jadeja. All-rounder Shivam Dube (3) could not create an impact in his debut game for the Yellow Brigade.

The unbeaten partnership between 70 runs between MS Dhoni (50* off 38 balls) and Jadeja (26*) took the team to a respectable total of 131/5 from 61/5. In reply, the two-time winners got off to a decent start with an opening partnership of 43 runs between Venkatesh Iyer (16) and Ajinkya Rahane. The former was caught behind by Dhoni off Dwayne Bravo in the seventh over. Nitish Rana scored a brisk 21 runs off 17 balls before he was dismissed by Bravo.

Rahane (44) was the next wicket to fall after playing an attractive inning with the scorecard reading 87/3. Sam Billings scored a quick 25 before he was caught at midwicket, trying to slog a dipping slower one from Bravo. In the end, the team won the game by six wickets and nine balls to spare. Skipper Shreyas Iyer (20*) and Sheldon Jackson (3*) helped the team to cross the line. Twitter went berserk after the one-sided win by the Men In Purple and Gold.
