Punjab took on Chennai in the 38th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium. Chennai won the toss and went with the obvious choice to bowl first. Punjab had a conservative start as Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan played with caution. Agarwal (18), however, gave away his wicket to Maheesh Theekshana in the sixth over. The men in red scored 37 runs in the powerplay and lost one wicket.

Dhawan was joined by Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the middle, who gave him the perfect support. The pair batted brilliantly and gained command of the innings. They kept nudging the ball and rotating the strike until the 12th over. Dhawan then took the charge as he started scoring more boundaries. He reached his half-century with a four in the 14th over of the game. They continued scoring well before Dwayne Bravo finally got the breakthrough in the 18th over. He took the wicket of Rajapaksa (42) at the score of 147. The duo added 110 runs in the partnership.

Liam Livingstone then played a mini cameo as he gave a perfect finish to the innings. Livingstone (19) lost his wicket to Bravo in the final over. Dhawan then struck a six while Jonny Bairstow smacked a four before being run out on the final ball. Punjab scored 187 runs in their quota of overs. Dhawan stayed not out on 88 runs in 59 balls. He hit nine fours and two sixes in his innings.

Chennai too had a slow start to their innings despite Ruturaj Gaikwad playing a couple of cuts for four in the first over. Robin Uthappa (one), on the other hand, did not start well and lost his wicket to Sandeep Sharma in the second over. The men in yellow scored 32 runs in the powerplay for the loss of two wickets. Mitchell Santner (nine) was bowled by Arshdeep Singh in the sixth over. Rishi Dhawan, playing his first Indian T20 League game in five years, then dismissed Shivam Dube in the seventh over to leave Chennai tottering at 40-3.

Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu kept the scoreboard ticking for a while as they added 49 runs together. Gaikwad, however, lost his wicket to Kagiso Rabada in the 13th over. Rayudu then started attacking and reached his fifty with a six in the 15th over. Chennai needed a big over as they needed 70 of last five overs. Sandeep Singh came into bowl and Rayudu smacked him for three sixes and a four in the 16th over to bring Chennai back in the game.

Arshdeep and Rabada bowled the next two overs and conceded just 12 runs between them. Rabada also took the important wicket of Rayudu with a cross-seam delivery. Rayudu scored 78 runs in 39 balls, with seven fours and six sixes before being dismissed. Arshdeep bowled the 19th over to Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni, and did well to concede just eight runs. With 28 runs needed in the final over, Dhoni hit a six on the first ball. However, Rishi Dhawan got his wicket on the third ball. Jadeja hit one more six in the over but the game was over by then. Punjab won the match against Chennai by 11 runs to win their fourth game.
