Mitchell Starc reaches new milestone

Mitchell Starc fastest to 50 wickets

Australia had a hard-fought match against India in their opener on Sunday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. While defending a low total of 199 runs. The Australian batters failed to have an impact after Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat on the slow pitch wicket of Chennai. Only David Warner and Steve Smith could get past the 40-run mark. The former scored 41 runs before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav. Smith on the other hand was the highest run scorer with 46 runs as he was bowled by a jaffer delivery from Ravindra Jadeja.

The Aussie batters did not have any answer to the spin department of India combining Jadeja, Ashwin, and Kuldeep. The three spinners picked up six wickets and they were bowled out for 199 runs. In response, the Australian pacers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood gave the five-time champions the best possible start. They dismissed three batters Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer without scoring.

Starc who is playing in his third ODI World Cup after picking up the wicket of Kishan, became the fastest to reach 50 wickets in the marquee tournament. He overcame the legendary pacer from Sri Lanka who had picked 50 wickets in 26 innings while the Aussie pacer reached the milestone in just 19 innings.

Starc eye new record

Starc has a possibility of beating the legendary Aussie pacer Glenn McGrath's record of the most wickets in the World Cups. McGrath has 71 wickets from just 39 matches. While the left-arm pacer after Sunday's match needs 22 more wickets to overcome the long-held record of McGrath. With the form he delivers in the World Cup, it can possibly be achieved in this marquee tournament.

Starc also holds the record for the most wickets in a single edition of the Cricket World Cup after taking 27 wickets in 10 matches in 2019. Mohammed Shami is the best-placed of the current bowler who is closest to the Australia seamer.
