On 1 January 2023, the Indian Cricket Board held a performance review meeting in Mumbai. All top personnel was present in that meeting to discuss the results from 2022 and the future steps for the betterment of Indian Cricket. The Board took many key decisions in that meeting, especially focusing on the fitness of players.
As a result of that meeting, the Board shortlisted a pool of 20 players for the 50-over World Cup in 2023 in India. Only these players will be playing all upcoming ODIs in this new year. Apart from this, they also introduced the Dexa Test along with the comeback of the Yo-Yo Test as new selection criteria for the Men in Blue. They also said that the VVS Laxman-led National Cricket Academy (NCA) will work with Indian T20 League franchises to monitor players’ fitness, especially those who have a history of injuries.
The Shortlisted 20 players for the World Cup will play only in the upcoming 35 ODIs in 2023
So, fans started to think or guess about the possible 20 players who can get shortlisted by the Board for the World Cup. Now, several reports are suggesting that Sanju Samson, Shikhar Dhawan, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, and Ravichandran Ashwin will not be a part of that pool. If these reports become true in the coming days, then it will be another heartbreak for Samson. Sanju Samson is a part of the home T20I series against Sri Lanka but not a part of the ODI series.
While it will be the end of the road for both veteran cricketers. The Board already axed Shikhar Dhawan from the upcoming ODI series at home against Sri Lanka. So, it might be the end for him for team India as he plays only in one format. On the other hand, it might be the end for Ashwin in the white-ball formats. He will focus only on the longest format of the game.
Here is the reported list of 20 players of team India for the 2023 World Cup:
