A complete dominant display with both bat and ball saw Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) annihilate Barbados Royals (BR) by 133 runs in match 13 of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 at Kensington Oval on Wednesday, August 30. A scintillating century by Martin Guptill, followed by a clinical bowling performance led by Andre Russell and Waqar Salamkheil handed Royals the heaviest defeat in terms of margin of runs in CPL history.
Royals captain Rovman Powell's decision to field first seemed like a good decision initially, as they managed to restrict Knight Riders to 69-2 inside 10 overs. However, a fantastic 108-run third-wicket partnership between opener Martin Guptill and skipper Kieron Pollard demolished the Royals' bowling attack to take the team total to a mammoth 194-5.
Losing the wickets of Mark Deyal and Nicholas Pooran early, Knight Riders had a cautious start to their innings, with Martin Guptill at one point playing at 100 strike rate. When Pollard came to the crease, the Kiwi striker shifted to top gear with 9 sixes and a four before eventually bringing up his 58-ball century in the final over. Guptill remained unbeaten while the Knight Riders captain departed after making 46 off 32 balls.
Russell did the damage early to set the tone for Knight Riders
Chasing 195, Royals got off to a disastrous start with Andre Russell picking up three quick wickets in the powerplay. The West Indies all-rounder dismissed Rahkeem Cornwall in the very first delivery and three balls later he removed Kyle Mayers as well. In his second over, Russell sent back Alick Athanaze, while Sunil Narine accounted for Laurie Evans to drag Royals into the back seat in the powerplay.
The hosts were unable to recover from the early tragedy and were eventually bowled out for 61 in 12.1 overs. The finishing procedures were done by Afghan left-arm wrist spinner Waqar Salamkheil, who grabbed four wickets for 14 runs in 3.1 overs. Russell took three wickets for 13 runs from two overs and Akeil Hosein picked up two for 16 from four overs.
